I want to start of by saying that I am going to do my best to stay spoiler free for this post. But I just had to share my thoughts about the latest book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses world. A Court of Frost and Starlight is a novella, which takes place after the events of the third book of the series and it is to be a bridge between this trilogy and a new trilogy, which will be coming out at some point in the future.

My thoughts on A Court of Frost and Starlight -
A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) is a retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. It features a human girl, Feyre who is taken ‘above the wall’ in to Pyrthian, a dangerous land filled with High Fae and fairies. I haven’t shared my thoughts on ACOTAR on the blog yet. I have no idea why as it is one of my favourite series.

Title: A Court of Frost and Starlight

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Synopsis of A Court of Thorns and Roses (so there are no spoilers)Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

Thoughts on the ACOTAR series: It’s no secret that I love Beauty and the Beast. It is my favourite fairy tale and my favourite Disney movie. I have read other Beauty and the Beast retellings but ACOTAR is my favourite. But wait… Bbcause it gets better… the second book in the series A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOMAF)  is even better than the first book! In fact, strangely enough it is the best book in the series (it is rare for me to like the middle book in a trilogy best). ACOMAF brings in so many new themes and characters. And if you go back and reread the first book, it shows you the story in a whole new light.

Anyone who follows me on Instagram may have seen the photos I post on the ACOTAR series and all of the bookish things I have connected to the series. It probably shows much I adore this series. I found that the themes raised in the later books were so interesting and so important. It opened my eyes to a whole host of incredible books and this series is a big part of the reason I have fallen back in love with reading since having my daughter.

A Court of Thorns and Roses - and all of the lovely bookish things

I am not going to deny that there are some issues present in the ACOTAR series, nothing is perfect. I love ACOTAR despite it’s flaws, I love so many of the characters despite their flaws. I love that there are characters that are flawed, that are healing, that are learning how to live after dark times.

I think that any book aimed at young adults, or any adults, which discusses issues such as sexual abuse, PTSD, and healthy and unhealthy relationships, is a good thing. We get to see Feyre at her strongest and at her most vulnerable in this series. I love that we now have fantasy books where there is this very realistic element… we don’t all fall in love at first sight and getting our happily ever after.  Some days we have to struggle, some days we have to recognise that we have made a bad choice, and some times we have to come to terms with the fact that who we were is not who we are right now.

A Court of Frost and Starlight - my thoughts - dedication page

My Thoughts on ACOFAS: I am sharing my thoughts on the series so that you can see where I am coming from in terms of the newest addition to the series; the A Court of Frost and Starlight (ACOFAS) novella. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews so far and this is really interesting for me. As it was a novella, rather than a full novel, I had different expectations for ACOFAS than I did for the other books. I did not expect much in terms of a plot and expected the main focus to be either character development or world building (the world building in ACOTAR is incredible, but more can always be added!). I also thought that there might be hints at where the next series might ‘go’ in terms of a direction/focus.

I loved the character development in ACOFAS, it was lovely to see some characters happy and healing, it was heartbreaking to see some characters really struggling. It was so wonderful to see how everyone was getting on after the end of the third book A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOWAR). I was happy that I got to see a little more of my favourite characters and I was very happy that I got to read more banter between the Inner Circle.

I love that we got to see a little more of the world of Prythian, and that we got to learn a little more about Prythian’s customs for Winter Solstice.  It was lovely to be back in that world, and to ‘see’ all of those characters again. ACOFAS was a lovely interlude in the middle of what I assume will be a long wait for the next book set in the ACOTAR world. I feel like ACOFAS was wonderful in so many ways and it matched (and exceeded in some places) my expectations. But maybe this was because I was not expecting anything like a full novel.

That being said, I did have some niggles about ACOFAS… I think that the switching from first to third person needed a little work to make it more polished, it felt clunky at times. And I feel that the two first person narrators we have in ACOFAS needed more work to make them have their own distinct voices and be different from each other. I am not sure what form the books to come in this series will take, but I hope that these issues are looked at for future books.

If you like the sound of this series you can check out the first book here – A Court of Thorns and Roses* and the other books, in series order are A Court of Mist and Fury,A Court of Wings and Ruin*, and A Court of Frost and Starlight*.

I love this series so much, and I am glad we get to visit the world again, if only for a little while. The fact that we also got an excerpt from the next book was a wonderful bonus and I have to say after reading that I am even more excited than before for the series to continue.
