Review: I loved reading both Gangster School one and two, in fact, I read both of them in 3 days I just couldn’t put them down! They had me laughing out loud so many times, and I love the humour that is woven through the stories.

Gangster School 2: The Brotherhood of Brimstone Review - Chapter 1 with black and white chapter header illustration of Milly

I would definitely recommend reading them in order, as there is just such richness to the school and characters that Wiseman has created you really wouldn’t want to miss out on the first book. The school of Blaggards is such a vivid and hilarious place, I am hoping that the two main characters Milly and Charlie will have lots more adventures there so we get to read more books.

I love that at the centre of the books  is this wonderful friendship between Milly and Charlie. These books really are a celebration of that friendship – they support each other, they argue and make up, and they realise that together they can accomplish so much. As Milly and Charlie struggle to fit to Blaggards it’s even more special that they have each other to rely on.

Gangster School 2: The Brotherhood of Brimstone Review - chapter 2 with black and white chapter heading illustration of Charlie

Both Milly and Charlie are so likeable, and I think that they are wonderful examples of characters that children will really empathise with.  They struggle with the same challenges that the children reading the books may be facing; starting a new school, making friends, dealing with bullies, creating their own moral compass, working out who they are and what they want to do in the future, and dealing with pressure of meeting parental expectations. The books have a wonderfully supportive message running through them, and I think they would be really helpful for any children who are struggling with these issues. Wiseman has captured these struggles so well and offers advice through Milly and Charlie and all the while maintaining a wonderful, humorous tone.
