I have a very special book to share with you today. It’s a book written by CBeebies presenter Jess French from Mini Beast Adventure with Jess. It’s published by Nosy Crow in collaboration with The National Trust. The premise of the book is simple, it contains 70 simple things we can all do for our planet.
As you can see from the photos, this book is incredible. It’s beautifully illustrated and it really brings these animals to life and it highlights what a wonderfully diverse range of habitats our planet is home to. Both my daughter and myself love the stunning illustrations on every page of the book, they really are something special.
After the book tells you what a habitat is, and lists and describes a range of habitats it then goes in to more details about each of the habitats that are listed. Not only do we explore familiar habitats, like our gardens and hedgerows, but we also get to ‘meet’ some of the animals, which call these places home.
Starting off in the garden we learn about Hedgehogs and Garden Tiger Moths, we then move further afield to explore the oceans and the jungles. We have already started putting some of the suggestions into practice and have built our very own bug hotel in the back garden.
The tone of the writing is perfect, educational but without being dry or judgmental. Jess French has really got the balance right with this book. My daughter really loves this book and over the past few weeks has been requesting it as a bedtime story. Each habitat has a double page devoted to it and then a double page filled with information about some of the animals from that habitat and then some suggestions of what you can do to help this habitat and the animals that live there. This breaks the book up into the perfect sized chunks for bedtime stories.
My 4 year old daughter has loved learning about all of these animals, their habitats and most importantly, what we can do to help.
If you have a child who had a budding interest in animals and/or the natural world around them then I would definitely recommend How to Help A Hedgehog and Protect a Polar Bear. And I honestly think it should be something that everyone reads. It’s a wonderful positive book about the impact that we can all have but doing some simple, and fun things, to help our planet.
I was sent a copy of How to Help a Hedgehog and Protect a Polar Bear for the purpose of this review. However, all opinions and words are my own.
